Spring Cleaning – TOSS IT AWAY? NO WAY!

Time to freshen up – Spring house cleaning is a good feeling!  Are you finding items you love broken, or not working? Please do not throw them in the trash to end up in the landfill where they degrade unnecessarily. Maybe they could be repaired – like at the new free community Repair Cafe! The first one is coming your way Sunday May 17 from 2-5pm at Helling Library Community Room. There will be Fixers there ready to see what they can do to make people happy. Want to be a fixer? We can use you.

Unwanted items can have new homes – or be renewed. Hospitality House might be able to use some things. Check the website to see what they really need https://hhshelter.org.  Habitat for Humanity ReStore can take all kinds of home-related items, if they are usable. Remember that they offer these goods to people who need help on their houses, and for new homes they help to build. ReStore will even come around in a truck to take larger items.  https://nchabitat.org/restore/  Thrift stores can accept a lot of saleable items you no longer need or want. All are basically donations to help the organizations and their people. Another good feeling!

WM McCourtney Road Transfer Station even has a little “store” where they offer items sent to trash that are perfectly usable for free.  They salvage a lot of usable stuff.  It is next to the Hazardous Waste stop before the Buy Back Center where the CRVs are redeemed.

Nevada County Health and Human Services is a place to call to ask about who might need what you have to offer. So many families are without basic goods and food. https://www.nevadacountyca.gov/1331/About-Health-Human-Services

For broken items– like a lamp that just needs a little something – a toaster that needs some help – or pants that need stitching – or a hole mended – or a bike that needs a fix – or maybe a table that needs a piece glued – or even jewelry that just needs a new hook.  Put the Repair Café on your calendar for the afternoon of May 17. It is free fix! And if it cannot be fixed, guidance will be given.

Toss it Away? NO Way!  Keep it out of the landfill! Give it new life – pass it on – we need to keep our materials in circulation since many are getting to be in short supply.  Circular Economy is a major goal for California. Little things like taking your film plastic to a Rotary box for collection is a big help. Those bags, bubble wrap and shrink wrap go to Trex to make new decking. And they add up! Look for boxes at BriarPatch, City halls, Chambers, Helling Library, and more locations.

Put the Repair Café on your calendar for May 17, June 27, and July 25. Bring an item to be fixed for free. Be a fixer! Share your skills with the community. Even the landfills will be happier.
